Seth’s Mentors
People who work in the trades are a wealth of knowledge and experience deeply needed by the next generation. If you enjoy sharing your knowledge with young people and seeing what they do with that knowledge, you should become a mentor. Most mentors work in their natural work setting with interns who are generously rewarded by our foundation, so the only commitment is time.
Seth’s Story
“As a young teenager Seth was a handful, so much so that when I worked as a property manager I suggested (maybe I demanded) that my landscaper, Perry should hire Seth to work for him over the summer. I didn’t care what he asked Seth to do ... I may have even suggested that I would pay Seth if Perry could just keep him busy. This “summer job” evolved into something that became a turning point in my son’s life. Because of the camaraderie, guidance and training, Seth realized that he had a gift for all things mechanical. As the summer progressed, Perry utilized Seth’s talents for things like repairing equipment and operating heavy equipment for large projects, like a backhoe and a skid loader. I was absolutely amazed by what my 15-year-old kid could do.
Long story short, I never had to pay Seth’s paycheck, and he made enough money to build his own first vehicle from scratch… and guess who took him to the salvage yards every weekend to find the parts and coach him through that build, yep it was Perry. He would make deals with Seth (i.e. if you can help me install this fence, I will help you find a transmission). After working with Perry on weekends and for a few summers, Seth realized that working with cars was a real passion, so he went on to work for the owner of a local body repair named Tom Weaver where again, Tom and Seth shared an immediate bond. Seth spent many weekends at work and focused on learning all he could, going to car shows with Tom and eventually becoming someone that his boss really relied on to do good work... 17 years old!”

“You might not make it to the top, but if you are doing what you love, there is much more happiness there than being rich or famous.”
